Does Facebook Ever Deserve an About-Face?

November 5th, 2009

Facebook has become a popular social networking site that has old friends and new friends connecting across the country and across town. However, I think there a few downsides to this new human heavy hitter. (Trust me, I caution you about re-visiting old loves not so much because of morals but chemicals!) facebook-logo

Long held data suggests that even the happily married often stray when they innocently rekindle a friendship with an old flame…particularly if that old flame was their first love!  It used to be that you’d have to ask friends and family for another person’s phone number; and it would seem socially and morally appropriate to do so only if you were both SINGLE.

Today, there is anonymity. In surfing the Internet we can easily find contact information at the touch of a button; it doesn’t matter whether we are single or married. We rationalize; “What could possibly be the harm in sending an e-mail? It’s private and unobtrusive, right? I just want to make sure that everything has turned out well for so-and-on.”

Over the next week, we will be doing a series of blog posts highlighting the dangers (and benefits) of Facebook to our relationships. If you are having any specific issues about Facebook or other social  networking sites, feel free to leave your questions in the comments!
